Guitarist Ron Eschete and his regular trio of the period (with bassist Todd Johnson and drummer Paul Humphrey) is joined on four of the ten selections on Rain or Shine by Poncho Sanchez on bongos, congas, and timbales. Surprisingly, Sanchez is almost unnoticeable, blending very much in the background on such non-Latin songs as “Some Other Time,” “Naima,” and “Nuages.” The focus throughout is on Eschete, which is not a bad thing because the versatile straight-ahead guitarist is in excellent form on seven jazz standards, two obscurities, and his own “Theme for Jeff.” Fans of bop and Latin jazz guitarists will enjoy this set (Scott Yanow/AllMusic).
