During the 1923–1924 period, Fletcher Henderson and His Orchestra emerged as the premiere African American big band in New York. This era marked a transition from their residency at the Club Alabam to the prestigious Roseland Ballroom and saw the pivotal arrival of Louis Armstrong in late 1924.

The AllMusic review by arwulf arwulf awarded the album 3½ stars and stated:”This is delightful music, old-fashioned and slightly hackneyed, yet well on its way to eventual maturity as big-band jazz.”
