At Storyville by Charlie Parker is a live jazz album capturing two historic radio broadcasts from the Storyville club in Boston during 1953. Released by Blue Note Records (initially in 1985), it is highly regarded for documenting “Bird” in exceptional form toward the end of his career, despite the “so-so” archival recording quality.
Recording Sessions & Personnel:
The album consists of performances from two distinct dates with different supporting lineups:
March 10, 1953: Parker is backed by the Red Garland Trio.
Piano – Red Garland (two years before his fame with Miles Davis)
Bass – Bernie (Billy) Griggs
Drums – Roy Haynes
September 22, 1953: Parker performs with a group led by Sir Charles Thompson.
Piano – Sir Charles Thompson
Trumpet – Herb Pomeroy
Bass – Jimmy Woode
Drums – Kenny Clarke
Critical reception:
The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow rated the album 3 stars and stated: “The recording quality is just so-so but Bird was in fine form for these sessions, playing hot versions of his usual repertoire.”
