In 1971, the Jazz Crusaders reinvented their sound, dropping “jazz” from their name and embracing electric bass and guitars. Their new album blends jazz-funk with elements of hard bop and soul-jazz, featuring tight horn interplay between Wilton Felder and Wayne Henderson, and a rhythm section led by Joe Sample’s funky Rhodes piano, Chuck Rainey’s basslines, and Larry Carlton’s guitar work. The album stands out for its sophisticated compositions, accessible grooves, and standout production by Stewart Levine. Highlights include the soulful, nearly 13-minute rendition of Carole King’s “So Far Away,” which became a hit on FM radio. This album marked a new chapter for the Crusaders, solidifying their place in the evolving jazz-rock fusion scene.oar. The Crusaders were onto something here and set themselves a new watermark, carving out a place for themselves in the new decade, and it turns out for posterity.” – Thom Jurek/AllMusic
