“Jackie Paris’ vocal charms were subtle and nuanced, but he earned praise from some of the most respected modernists of the ’50s, among them Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, and Lenny Bruce. The Jackie Paris Sound is a 12-song set of standards, many of them hoary but all of them enlivened by Paris’ unique way to structure and phrase a vocal. (Part of the reason his talents never translated to popularity may be that appreciating his singing assumes a fine knowledge of the way other jazz singers have sung a song.) A quartet with Barry Galbraith on guitar fills in a few gaps, but this is undeniably Paris’ show and he shines on a set of standards he’d obviously enjoyed for decades.” – John Bush/AllMusic.
