Harry James And His Big Band …Plus The Dixieland Five – Double Dixie!

This LP was a change of pace for trumpeter Harry James. Although his big band is still utilized, James is also featured as part of the “Dixieland Five” with trombonist Ray Sims, trumpeter Dick Cathcart, clarinetist Matty Matlock and tenor saxophonist Eddie Miller. On nine selections (totaling a rather stingy 28½ minutes), James enthusiastically jams on such 1920s numbers as “My Monday Date,” “Cornet Chop Suey” and “Weatherbird.” There are a couple of departures (most notably “The Truth”), but in general, the mixture of a Dixieland frontline with a Basieish big band works quite well. Harry James should have recorded more Dixieland, rather than sticking so much in later years to nostalgic swing (Scott Yanow/AllMusic).
