The opener, his burning “Majority,” starts immediately by featuring Hart trading off with tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce. On the strutting “Big H.M.” the 22-year-old altoist welcomes his employer of the time, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, and holds his own. Hart also roars on “Del Sasser” and flourishes on the hard bop material, much of which also features the fine trumpeter Thomas Williams. In addition Hart’s treatments of some standard ballads finds him showing maturity and great restraint, letting the themes tell their story without feeling the need to double-time everything.
