Whispers and Promises is studio album by Earl Klugh released in 1989. The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Performance at the 32nd Grammy Awards in 1990. In this release, Klugh delivers his well-known “light and smooth guitar picking, backed by swarms of violins, chimes and gentle alto saxophones, beautifully arranged and wonderfully romantic”. The album also features Grammy Award winner Don Sebesky as conductor and arranger.
Critical Reception
“Even when he is doing “music for elevators that only go up,” Klugh remains one of the more tasteful and interesting performers in that vast wasteland known as fusion. Part of the reason lies in the always appealing sound of his acoustic guitar. And unlike many of his peers, Klugh is willing to occasionally experiment with different genres, even if they are done with numbing simplicity. On his first solo album in nearly three years, Klugh unsheathes the delicately evocative “Tango Classico,“ which makes it clear that he only occasionally delivers on his real promise.” – Chris Heim/Chicago Tribune.
The AllMusic website awarded the album 3 stars.
