A real killer from vibesman Mike Mainieri – a set that’s got a darker edge than some of his previous work, while still hanging onto all the warm touches of his own instrument in the lead! Backings are full, but never uptight – and there’s a loosness to the record that really works well with the vibes — an electric mode that’s warm and often a bit spontaneous – served up with help from Warren Bernhardt and Don Grolnick on keyboards, Jeremy Steig on flute, and Kazuo Watanabe on guitar! Tunes are pretty darn fresh — some really inventive writing that pushes the edges, but not in a jamming fusion way – and titles include “Crossed Wires”, “Bullet Train”, “L’Image”, “Flying Colours”, “Wanderlust”, and “Bamboo”.-Dusty Groove.
