“This duo recording featuring Swedish guitarist Jan Johansson with veteran bassist Red Mitchell is one of several intimate sessions recorded in Mitchell’s Stockholm apartment. The guitarist had played a few concerts with Mitchell prior to the recording, and their chemistry together is readily apparent. Johansson’s lively “Bluesplankan” is the masterpiece of his three originals, while Mitchell (a very underrated composer) sings and plays piano during his hilarious blues “Bureau Blues,” which laments the headaches of bureaucracies. The bulk of the date is dedicated to time-tested standards, including a memorable “In a Sentimental Mood” and an extended workout of “Loverman.” Like all small-group recordings featuring Red Mitchell, fans of the late bassist will enjoy this date.” – Ken Dryden/AllMusic.
