Despite the billing, the majority of this LP features the Count Basie orchestra during 1939-40 with a generous amount of solo space given to the great Lester Young; Harry Edison, Buddy Tate and Buck Clayton also have their spots during these high-quality performances. Actually, the most interesting selections are taken from a rehearsal during which Basie, Young, Clayton and Count’s rhythm section collaborated with Benny Goodman and guitarist Charlie Christian. The performances look toward bop and cool jazz while being the epitome of small-group swing. (Scott Yanow/AllMusic).
