AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow:
Drummer Paul Barbarin (a fine composer whose “Bourbon Street Parade” is included on this set) always had New Orleans bands that played in tune, knew how to solo, and could jam in coherent and often exciting ensembles. This Atlantic release features his 1955 septet (with trumpeter John Brunious, clarinetist Willie Humphreys, trombonist Bob Thomas, pianist Lester Santiago, Danny Barker on banjo, and guest bassist Milt Hinton) playing a variety of traditional and ancient themes. These performances, ranging from three to nine minutes, find the band really stretching out and creating memorable and enjoyable music.
