This release offers one and a half LPs on a single CD – an amazing 74.54 minutes of great jazz! These sides were recorded by Kid Ory under his contract with Norman Granz for Verve when he was running On The Levee, his own club in San Francisco. Trumpeter Marty Marsala and clarinettist Darnell Howard were both working at Club Hangover with Earl Hines at the time and were not regular members of Ory’s band but the relaxed feel of the albums they made together, with a typically fine rhythm section, is arguably some of the best of Kid Ory’s latter-day work. The recordings date from 25th and 26th August 1957 and 27th October 1957 and were recorded in Los Angeles. Humphrey Lyttelton has called Kid Orythe finest bandmaster in the New Orleans tradition since Morton, for not only is the trombonist a fine soloist and ensemble player, he also dictates – in a subtle but decisive way – exactly what his musicians shall do. And that ensemble itself is a distinguished one made up of performers who are skilled at creating that precise but relaxed counterpoint known as New Orleans Jazz (Upbeat).
