Jazz Eyes is an album by saxophonist John Jenkins and trumpeter Donald Byrd recorded in 1957 and released on Regent Records (a subsidiary of Savoy Records). Savoy issued it again later with the alternate title Star Eyes.
“This LP has the feel of a jam session. Trumpeter Donald Byrd co-led the date with the Charlie Parker-influenced altoist John Jenkins; their sidemen were trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Art Taylor. Although the other musicians play well, it is for Jenkins’ playing that this date is most highly recommended for he did not make that many sessions before dropping out of music. Jenkins contributed three originals to this date (highlighted by the long blues “Rockaway”) which alternate with fine versions of the standards “Star Eyes” and “Darn That Dream.” This is an excellent album that deserves to be reissued on CD.” – Scott Yanow/AllMusic .
